On the Season Finale Derval discusses the concept of Smart Cities with Stephan James. Stephan is a techie, entrepreneur, social impact enthusiast and founder of Parkt. Inspired by the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, this environmentally conscious startup provides sustainable solutions to real problems, beginning with parking and expanding into other areas such as lighting, waste management, and more. Parkt is aligned with Goal 11 of the SDGs: Sustainable cities and communities. The platform allows persons to pre-book parking, offer vacant spaces for parking, maximizing efficiency and ultimately reducing the carbon footprint in urban areas. Parkt is the first step in creating and scaling a sustainable mobility ecosystem and pioneering the development of Smart Cities within the region and beyond.
Many of us have a smart phone, smart watches, why not live, work and play in smart cities?
Smart cities use technology and data to improve the efficiency of its operation, enhance the quality of life of its occupants and boost the local economy. Efficiency augurs well for the sustainable development of urban areas. With growing populations, cities face several challenges such as congestion, waste disposal and pollution. Investment in physical infrastructure and the human and social capital will transform urban areas to become more innovative, and resilient, to the benefit of all stakeholders.
