Achieving Sustainable Development with Dr. Nanda Dulal Das
Show Notes

The definition of 'development' has evolved from purely economic terms, measured as GDP, to one that includes the ecological and social dimensions. On the season finale, host Derval Barzey discusses the concept of Sustainable Development with Dr. Nanda Dulal Das.  This is defined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). https://sdgs.un.org/goals

Along the pursuit of the SDGs there are many obstacles, including the ongoing pandemic, as well as protectionist policies by individual countries, and a lack of accurate data.  With vast differences in populations size, India (1.3 Billion) and Trinidad & Tobago (1.3 Million) share some of the challenges to achieving Sustainable Development. Both countries have achieved 1 out of 17 SDGs and the others are in varying stages of progress.

Despite the challenges, Dr. Dulal Das remains optimistic that the SDGs are in fact  achievable. He is particularly interested in "Goal 2 of the SDG: Zero Hunger" and "Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities" and offers possible solutions to assist developing nations:

  • relieving the debt burden through wavering of loan and interest rate pardon from development banks
  • introduction of food credits (similar to carbon credits)
  • redirecting the labour force to agriculture to boost food production
  • using technology to maximize resources
