Carbon Capture | Marsha King | Demystify Series

Derval Barzey, Marsha King Season 9 Episode 80

Demystifying Carbon Capture

The first episode of the Demystify series explores various aspects of carbon capture, including its role in addressing global decarbonisation challenges, environmental justice concerns, and the importance of community engagement in implementation.

This conversation also touched on the risks of carbon dioxide storage and transportation, as well as the need to consider social and economic factors in the transition to renewable energy sources.

Marsha King, a sustainable energy PhD student at Arizona State University, explains that carbon capture involves capturing carbon dioxide from various sources like power plants or directly from the air. She works on direct air capture technology at ASU's Center for Negative Carbon Emissions, studying methods to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. With over a decade of experience in the oil and gas industry, Marsha brings valuable insights into this controversial climate solution.

Key points

  • The role of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) in addressing global decarbonization challenges.
  • The complexity of climate action and the energy transition. Is CCS a "false solution" or a tool for fossil fuel companies to continue their existence?
  • The intersection of carbon capture and environmental justice; the disproportionate impacts of environmental injustices on marginalized communities, including indigenous people, people of colour, and low-income communities.
  • The importance of involving communities in the project development process to ensure the project aligns with their needs and to avoid resistance and mistrust.
